02 February 2016 US implementation of Visa Waiver Program Improvement and Terrorist Travel Prevention Act of 2015 discussed The United States began implementing changes pursuant to the Visa Waiver Program Improvement and Terrorist Travel Prevention Act of 2015 (the Act) on January 21. The Act contains categorical exclusions from the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) for nationals of "state sponsors of terrorism" as classified by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), including nationals of Syria, Iraq, Iran and Sudan. The enhancements also bar individuals who have traveled to these countries from utilizing the VWP, even if they would otherwise qualify for the VWP. The enhancements do not bar travel to the United States; rather, they require that the individual affected by the restrictions obtain a US visa prior to such travel. There are some exceptions based on the reason for travel, and waivers may be available on a case-by-case basis for individuals who have traveled to these countries. Document ID: 2016-0229 |
