City of Detroit, Michigan will continue collecting income taxes in 2016

As we previously reported in Tax Alert 2015-1870, as part of Detroit's post-bankruptcy management plan, the Michigan Department of Treasury will begin collecting the city's taxes and processing related returns. (News release, Michigan Department of Treasury, September 15, 2015.)

According to a recent announcement from the City of Detroit, the Michigan Department of Treasury will begin to collect income tax withholding and income tax from corporations, partnerships and trusts and estates beginning January 1, 2017.

The Michigan Department of Treasury started processing City of Detroit individual income taxes starting in January 2016.

Businesses must continue to file their 2016 withholding with the City of Detroit.
