Law firm clients: Clarifying extension filing deadlines for law firms with corporate partners

New York's recent announcement requiring e-filing partnerships with Article 9A corporate partners to request extensions to file their 2015 New York state income tax returns has generated some confusion about extension filing deadlines.

New York previously announced that partnerships with corporate partners must file Form IT-370-PF, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File for Partnerships and Fiduciaries, because the state cannot currently process all the forms accompanying the partnership's electronically filed return. The announcement applied to partnerships that: (1) have corporate partners; and (2) must file their New York state income tax returns electronically.

The deadlines to file extensions for law firms (Form IT-370-PF) and Article 9A corporate partners are as follows:

— Law firms with Article 9A corporate partners — April 18, 2016

— Laws firms without Article A corporate partners — April 18, 2016

— Article 9A corporate partners — March 15, 2016
