15 March 2016 US Department of Homeland Security releases final rule increasing OPT for STEM students The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on March 9, published an advanced copy of its final rule (effective May 10) modifying the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program. The rule increases the additional OPT time for F-1 students who have completed a qualifying degree program in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) from 17 to 24 months. It also increases the allowable unemployment period during a STEM OPT extension to 60 days.
