Québec budget 2016-2017 discussed

Québec's Finance Minister tabled his third budget on March 17, under the theme "Together, let's move Québec forward." This budget follows an eventful year in which the focus was on putting public finances on solid ground. Spending growth was limited to 1.7% for 2015-2016, whereas it totaled 3.3% in 2013-2014. The Minister was proud to table a first balanced budget after six consecutive years of deficits. The surplus for 2015- 2016 is expected to amount to $1.4 billion. The Minister also anticipates a $2 billion surplus for 2016-2017. Québec is the only Canadian jurisdiction, apart from British Columbia, to have a balanced budget. The budget does not include any tax or rate increases. The leeway generated by putting public finances on solid footing has allowed a number of tax relief measures for individuals and businesses to be introduced. The government also intends to continue fighting tax evasion and aggressive tax planning.
