Free Trade Agreement between Costa Rica and Colombia will be effective August 1, 2016

During the Pacific Alliance Summit held in Puerto Varas, Chile from June 27, 2016 through July 1, 2016, the Ministers of Trade for Costa Rica and Colombia determined that the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the two countries will be effective August 1, 2016. Costa Rica enacted the FTA into law (Law N° 9238) on May 16, 2014, after both countries signed the agreement on May 11, 2013.

According to the Costa Rican Ministry of Foreign Trade, bilateral trade between Costa Rica and Colombia was US $398 million in 2014, representing a 28% increase in the last decade. The main goods traded include medications, chemical products, prosthetic devices, syringes, polypropylene, iron bars and steel rods.
