Michigan Treasury Department to begin collecting Detroit income tax withholding in 2017

The Michigan Department of Treasury announced that beginning January 1, 2017 it will begin to collect and enforce the City of Detroit's income tax withholding and will administer the City's corporate, partnership and fiduciary income tax return processes.

As previously reported, as part of Detroit's post-bankruptcy management plan, the Department entered into an agreement to process the City's individual income tax returns for calendar year 2015 (due in 2016) and business and fiduciary Income Tax returns beginning with the 2016 tax year. Due to the success of the first stage, the Department will begin to collect and administer the city's corporate tax and income tax withholding.

According to the news release, City of Detroit leaders and Department of Treasury staff are working collaboratively to ensure a seamless transition and quality customer service for Detroit taxpayers.

"The Michigan Department of Treasury is focusing on building a culture of taxpayer service. Our partnership with the City of Detroit is an example of this work in action. For the first time, Detroit taxpayers will have access to a consolidated system for filing their City and State taxes," stated Nick Khouri, Treasurer of the State of Michigan.

Forms, instructions, and additional information will soon be available on the Michigan Department of Treasury's website.
