19 January 2017 Michigan 2017 withholding tax tables available, Forms W-2 filing reminders The Michigan Treasury Department announced that the 2017 income tax withholding rate will remain at 4.25% and the personal exemption amount continues at $4,000. The 2017 wage-bracket income tax withholding tables are available here. The Department continues to require Forms 5081, 2016 Sales, Use and Withholding Taxes Annual Return and W-2 to be filed by February 28, 2017. The agency will not match the new federal calendar year 2016 submission deadline of January 31, 2017. The 2017 version of Form 5081, continuing to reflect the February 28 deadline, is available here. Payers reporting Michigan withholding on Forms 1099-R must also report this information to the Department by February 28, 2017. Form 1099-MISC reflecting nonemployee compensation for services performed in Michigan must be filed by February 28, 2017, regardless of the state of residence of the payee and whether or not Michigan income tax was withheld. Information on filing Forms W-2 for calendar year 2016 has not yet been released; however, a Department representative recently informed EY that reporting on CD, DVD, flash drive and tape cartridge continue to be the options for employers of 250 or more employees that are required to file magnetically. The option to electronically file Forms W-2 is still not available at this time. (Telephone conversation, January 3, 2017.)
