Virgin Islands to match new federal Form W-2/1099-MISC deadline

The Virgin Islands Bureau of Internal Revenue has released its annual Form W-2/1099 electronic filing information letters. For calendar year 2016 Forms W-2VI, the deadline for submission to the Bureau is accelerated from April 1 to January 31, 2017, matching the new federal Form W-2VI deadline.

Forms 1099-MISC with nonemployee compensation reported in Box 7 must also be filed January 31, 2017, with the Bureau, matching the new federal deadline. The deadline for submission to the Bureau of all other Forms 1099 is April 3, 2017. The deadline for submission of Form 5498 is May 31, 2017.

Employers filing 100 or more Forms W-2VI or 1099 with the Bureau must file on CD. Smaller employers may submit paper copies of Forms W-2VI and 1099.

Form W-3SS must be used to transmit Copy Form A of Form W-2VI to the Social Security Administration, while Copy 1 of Form W-3SS must be used to transmit Copy 1 of Form W-2VI to the Bureau. See the Bureau's Tax Structure Booklet for more information on taxes administered by the Bureau.
