Michigan announces electronic W-2 filing option

The Michigan Treasury Department announced that employers will now have the option of filing Forms W-2 electronically using the Department's Treasury Online system.

A Department representative tells us that employers continue to be allowed to report Forms W-2 information on CD, DVD, flash drive and tape cartridge. Employers of 250 or more employees are required to file magnetically or electronically. (Telephone conversation, January 23, 2017.)

The Department continues to require Forms 5081, 2016 Sales, Use and Withholding Taxes Annual Return and W-2 to be filed by February 28, 2017.

As we reported previously, the agency will not match the new federal calendar year 2016 submission deadline of January 31, 2017.

The 2017 version of Form 5081, continuing to reflect the February 28 deadline, is available here.

Payers reporting Michigan withholding on Forms 1099-R must also report this information to the Department by February 28, 2017. Form 1099-MISC reflecting nonemployee compensation for services performed in Michigan must be filed by February 28, 2017, regardless of the state of residence of the payee and whether or not Michigan income tax was withheld.
