Democrats boycott Finance votes

On January 31, 2017, Democratic members of the Senate Finance Committee boycotted a 10 a.m. executive session to consider the nominations of banker and financier Steven Mnuchin to become Treasury Secretary, and of Rep. Tom Price (R-GA) to be Secretary of Health and Human Services.

Committee rules require the presence of at least one member of the majority party and one member of the minority party to constitute a quorum for the conduct of business, meaning votes on the nominations are postponed for now. Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-UT) expressed disappointment in the tactic and said he would re-schedule the session.

Ranking Member Ron Wyden (D-OR) said: "This morning, the Finance Committee was scheduled to vote on two nominees who have misled the public and held back important information about their backgrounds. Until questions are answered, Democrats believe the committee should not move forward with either nomination."
