14 April 2017 Service determines Section 45 renewable energy production credit for 2017 The Service announced that the Section 45 renewable electricity production credit for 2017 is: (i) 2.4 cents per kilowatt hour on the sale of wind-produced electricity, closed-loop biomass, geothermal energy and solar energy (from 2.3 cents in 2016); and (ii) 1.2 cents per kilowatt hour on the sale of electricity produced in open-loop biomass facilities, small irrigation power facilities, landfill gas facilities, trash combustion facilities and qualified hydropower facilities (unchanged from 2016). With regard to coal, the credit is $6.909 per ton on the 2016 sale of qualified refined coal. For calendar year 2017, the credit for Indian coal production has expired. The credit is not phased out for 2016 because the reference prices for electricity produced from wind and fuel used as feedstock for refined coal do not exceed the relevant inflation-adjusted multiple. In addition, the credit is not phased out for electricity produced from closed-loop biomass, open-loop biomass, geothermal energy, solar energy, small irrigation power, municipal solid waste and qualified hydropower production.
