27 June 2017 Puerto Rico SUI taxable wage base remains at $7,000 for calendar year 2017 Per a representative of the US Department of Labor (DOL), the Puerto Rico 2017 state unemployment insurance (SUI) wage base will remain at $7,000 for the entire calendar year rather than increase to as much as $10,500 as allowed under a recent change in the law (Email response to inquiry.) According to a DOL legislative team member, it has been determined that under Puerto Rico legislation enacted in January of this year (Puerto Rico Chapter 453, L. 2017, the Law of Transformation and Labor Flexibility) the decision of whether to increase the SUI taxable wage base is left with the Puerto Rico Secretary of Labor and Human Resources. Absent a decision by the Secretary, the director of the Puerto Rico unemployment program has decided that the taxable wage base will remain at $7,000 for calendar year 2017. It is unclear at this time whether the taxable wage base will increase (up to a maximum of $10,500) for future calendar years. Document ID: 2017-1024 |
