Mexican Ministry of Economy creates new website to facilitate NAFTA modernization public comment process in preparation for renegotiation

In accordance with the Mexican President's request to maintain a permanent public comment process to guide the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) modernization, the Ministry of Economy announced, on June 26, 2017, a new website that will serve as the mechanism for public comments on the NAFTA modernization. Using the website, interested parties may publish comments and attach their proposals regarding the NAFTA modernization from June 26 through July 26, 2017.

The Ministry of Economy's objective in creating the website is to further expand the comment process, which began on February 1, 2017, and extend it to additional sectors that may be interested in contributing to the NAFTA modernization discussion. The information and documentation submitted through the website will be considered public information and should not contain any confidential or reserved information.

In the United States, US Trade Representative (USTR) Robert Lighthizer notified Congress of the Trump Administration's intent to renegotiate NAFTA on May 18, 2017, initiating a 90-day notice period under the Bipartisan Congressional Trade Priorities and Accountability Act of 2015 (TPA). Accordingly, the United States may begin NAFTA renegotiations as early as August 2017. The USTR sought public input to assist in developing negotiating objectives and positions. More than 12,000 comments were received and public hearings regarding NAFTA renegotiation took place in the United States. A detailed summary of US NAFTA negotiating objectives is expected in July 2017.
