Minimum wage to increase in number of states in 2018

Though the federal minimum wage remains at $7.25 per hour, state minimum wage rates will increase in a number of states next year. These increases are the result of voter approval, law change or because the minimum wage is indexed for inflation each year.?

Employers should also remain vigilant for localities increasing the minimum wage for employees working within city or county limits (for example, several cities in California, such as Los Angeles). While several states have passed preemption laws that prohibit localities from passing minimum wage laws/ordinances that differ from state law (e.g., Missouri in mid-2017, to block St. Louis/Kansas City minimum wage increases); there are other states such as California that don't restrict localities in this way.

The attached Tax Alert includes a chart that details the states that have announced minimum wage increases in 2018. More changes could be announced prior to January 1, so employers should continue to monitor developments.
