09 January 2018 Senate Committee Ratios Narrow, Whitehouse Joins Finance Senate leaders on January 9, 2018, announced updated committee assignments to now reflect a one-seat Republican majority on all committees. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) has been added to the Senate Finance Committee, making the new ratio on the Committee 14 Republicans and 13 Democrats. It was previously 14 Republicans and 12 Democrats. The new party ratios on committees reflect the narrowed Republican majority in the Senate of 51-49 following the victory of Democrat Doug Jones in the Alabama Senate election. The previous Senate party ratio was 52 Republicans and 48 Democrats. The Democratic announcement on committee membership changes reflects committee assignments for Jones and Senator Tina Smith (D-MN), who filled the seat vacated by Senator Al Franken (D-MN).
