31 January 2018 President Trump delivers State of the Union Address In his State of the Union Address on January 30, 2018, President Trump said the tax law enacted in December has led to job creation, higher wages, and bonuses for American workers, and called on Congress to produce a bill that generates at least $1.5 trillion for new infrastructure investment. He said lawmakers should set aside their differences and seek out common ground, and "summon the unity we need to deliver for the people." The President said the new tax law delivered on a promise he made to the American people from the same podium 11 months ago, and that, "Our massive tax cuts provide tremendous relief for the middle class and small businesses." President Trump said it is time to rebuild the nation's crumbling infrastructure — including roads, bridges, highways, railways, and waterways — and that America is a nation of builders. Every federal dollar dedicated to infrastructure investment should be leveraged by partnering with state and local governments and, "where appropriate," tapping into private sector investment to "permanently fix the infrastructure deficit," he said. He also called for streamlining the permitting and approval process. The President said the nation has turned the page on "decades of unfair trade deals" and that the "era of economic surrender is totally over." He said trading relationships are expected to be fair and reciprocal. The President said the Administration will work to fix bad trade deals, negotiate new ones, and protect American workers and intellectual property through strong trade enforcement. President Trump said his Administration has eliminated more regulations in its first year than any other Administration, and has "ended the war on American energy" and on coal. He said that because of his Administration's actions "auto plants and other plants will be opening up all over our country," and that, while for many years companies were only leaving the country, they are now "roaring back" and want to be in the United States. President Trump said, "Over the next few weeks, the House and Senate will be voting on an immigration reform package," and described his proposal to provide a "path to citizenship for 1.8 million illegal immigrants who were brought here by their parents at a young age" and to secure the border. The President also called on lawmakers to end the defense sequester and fully fund the military. With regard to health care, President Trump said patients with terminal conditions and terminal illness should have access to experimental treatment immediately, and that one of his biggest priorities is to reduce the price of prescription drugs. "I have directed my administration to make fixing the injustice of high drug prices one of my top priorities for the year," he said. He also said steps must be taken to combat opioid addiction.
