17 October 2018 Minnesota 2018 income tax withholding tables and rates unchanged by federal TCJA The Minnesota Department of Revenue recently confirmed that the 2018 state income tax withholding wage-bracket and percentage-method tables released in December 2017 remain unchanged for 2018 by the federal Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) and the release of an updated federal Form W-4 in February 2018. According to the Department, employers should suggest to employees who have made recent changes to their federal withholding to review their Minnesota withholding. Employees may use the federal 2017 Form W-4 as a guide to determine whether they are having enough Minnesota state income tax withheld. If the number of allowances on the 2017 form is different from the federal 2018 Form W-4, employees can complete Minnesota Form W-4MN to specify the amount of Minnesota withholding. Employees may use allowances calculated on the 2017 Form W-4 as a guideline to complete Form W-4MN. The Department typically issues an updated employer withholding guide and revised wage-bracket and percentage-method withholding tables in December for the following tax year (i.e., in December 2018 for the 2019 tax year). When available, the updated employer guide for 2019 will be posted here. See Tax Alert 2018-0039 for more on 2018 income tax withholding and Tax Alert 2018-1604 for changes in the methods to file Forms W-2 with the Department.
