Colorado mandates all employers file UI quarterly wage detail report electronically

Recent proposed changes to Colorado unemployment insurance (UI) regulations require all employers file the quarterly UI wage detail report, Form UITR-1a, Wage Report, electronically over the state's Department of Labor and Employment electronic reporting system, My UI Employer.

The new requirement is effective for the third quarter 2018, with returns due by October 31, 2018, but a Department representative informs us that employers will be given several quarters to comply with the new requirement. Electronically filed wage reports should be filed using the electronic system or by file transfer protocol (FTP), which is recommended for employers of more than 100 employees. (Email response to inquiry.)

The regulation allows employers to request a one-time waiver of the electronic reporting requirement.

According to the representative, the new electronic filing requirement does not impact the filing of the contribution report or payment of contributions (referred to as "premiums" by the Department) at this time. Employers currently are still allowed to file the Form UITR-1, Premium Report, on the paper form sent to them each quarter by the Department. Employers that choose to file both Forms UITR-1 and UITR-1a electronically may request to discontinue receipt of the quarterly blank report.

For more information on quarterly UI reporting, see the Department's website.
