How US employers address global payroll challenges — the webcast polling results

In an increasingly global economy, payroll, tax and HR professionals are challenged to understand and comply with a vast array of new rules and to incorporate these requirements into existing payroll policies and practices. During our June 25, 2019 webcast, we surveyed the more than 2,000 participants about how they are addressing their global payroll challenges.

First, we asked executives how many vendors their US-based employers use to support their international payroll and employment operations. While a majority (54%) use a small number of vendors (between 0 and 4) we also see a more fragmented system in place at other companies, with 13% using between 5 and 10 vendors, and 8% using more than 10. Regarding having a program in place to track and maintain US payroll compliance for foreign employees working in the US, most companies currently appear less prepared. Just 43% have a process or program in place, while 29% are not sure and 28% don't yet have a process or are considering creating one.

Finally, we asked executives if they currently have a process in place for their international assignment program to accurately report global compensation. More than half (53%) said "Yes, we report to both taxing authorities and to employees," 29% have no process in place, and 18% have a process in place but only provide information to employees so they can complete their tax returns.
