14 January 2020 Maine 2020 tax rate notices to be reissued due to printing error; 2020 SUI tax rate table remains at lowest level on Schedule A; wage base unchanged For the fourth year consecutive year, Maine 2020 state unemployment insurance (SUI) tax rates continue to range from 0.00% to 5.4% on Schedule A, the lowest possible rate schedule. The average/new employer rate for 2020 is 1.86%, up from 1.83% for 2019. (Emailed news release, Maine Department of Labor, December 19, 2019.) Employers continue to pay the additional 0.06% Competitive Skills Scholarship Fund (CSSF) surcharge for each quarter in 2020. The Maine Department of Labor initially mailed the 2020 rate notices on December 20, 2019. However, a notice on the Department's website indicates that there was a problem with the printing of the tax rate on the notice, which will cause the rate notices to be reissued. Experience-rated employers may make a voluntary contribution to reduce their assigned tax rate within 30 days of the rate notice mailing date. We have requested clarification on whether the voluntary contribution deadline applies only to the originally issued notices or to the date on the reissued notices. For more information on unemployment taxes in Maine, see the Department's website.
