Uruguay's Executive Power issues a decree authorizing tax-free importation of certain medical supplies

The decree allows certain medical supplies to be imported tax-free. It also allows the Ministry of Public Health to issue a provisional registration for certain medical supplies that are manufactured, distributed and marketed in Uruguay.

Uruguay's Executive Power issued Decree No. 122/2020 authorizing the Ministry of Social Development and the Ministry of Public Health to import reagents to carry out diagnoses, medical equipment or therapeutic devices without imposing taxes, once those supplies have been approved by the competent technical office of the Ministry of Public Health.

The decree also establishes that, when the Executive Power declares a national sanitary emergency, as is currently the case, the Ministry of Public Health may issue a provisional registration for those medical supplies that are manufactured, distributed and marketed in Uruguay. The Ministry of Public Health will determine the requirements that companies must meet to receive a provisional registration. The medical supplies must be registered for them to be sold in Uruguay.
