Senate Banking Committee questions Mnuchin, Powell on progress of CARES Act rescue programs

Powell says 'Main Street loans' will be up & running by June; senators ask about Paycheck Protection, state & local aid, high unemployment, and transparency of rescue funds

The Senate Banking Committee on May 19 held a hearing on "The Quarterly CARES Act Report to Congress." The witnesses were Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome "Jay" Powell, who are required by a provision of the CARES Act pandemic response law to provide regular testimony on the progress of the law's emergency assistance programs. The hearing was conducted on an all-remote basis, with all senators and witnesses appearing via video connections and no hearing room.
