Finance Committee holds hearing on unemployment benefits

The Senate Finance Committee held a hearing on June 9 on “Unemployment Insurance During COVID-19: The CARES Act and the Role of Unemployment Insurance During the Pandemic” that focused on the debate over whether the $600 per week unemployment benefits expansion should be extended past its July 31 expiration given concerns that the add-on provides an incentive for people to stay out of work. At the hearing, Democrats also pushed the broader point that Congress should work soon to enact additional coronavirus response legislation. Senator Rob Portman’s (R-OH) proposal for a temporary $450 per week return-to-work bonus was discussed as an approach going forward.
