Treasury announces 'aggressive plan' to tackle tax return backlog, including moving 700 IRS employees to work on paper returns and deploying technology to automate return processing

A Treasury Department press release announcing an "aggressive plan" to address the backlog of unprocessed tax returns reports that the IRS is currently shifting 700 employees at the Austin, Texas, Ogden, Utah, and Kansas City, Missouri campuses to process original, paper tax returns. In addition, Treasury and the IRS plan to address the backlog by developing and deploying technology tools to automate return processing. A Tax Alert is forthcoming.
