Equal-protection component of Due Process Clause does not require Congress to extend SSI benefits to Puerto Rico residents, Supreme Court holds

In United States v. Vaello Madero, the Supreme Court has reversed the Fifth Circuit to hold that the equal-protection component under the Fifth Amendment's Due Process Clause does not require Congress to pay Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits to residents of Puerto Rico to the same extent that SSI benefits are available to residents of the 50 states. The decision was 8-1, with Justice Sonya Sotomayor the lone dissenter.
