Sweden allows applications from eligible Ukrainian citizens to extend their status under the Temporary Protection Directive

Effective February 1, the Swedish authorities are accepting applications from eligible Ukrainian citizens to extend their immigration status in Sweden pursuant to the Temporary Protection Directive (“the Directive”). The deadline for submitting extension applications is March 4. In March 2022, the Swedish government implemented the Directive for Ukrainian citizens and residents (who received residence authorization under international protection guidelines) who arrived in the country from Ukraine on or after October 30, 2021. Under the Directive, these individuals were eligible to obtain Swedish temporary residence permits if they sought to stay in Sweden for 90 days or more, provided they had valid identity documents (e.g., passports or other authorized documents) and met other relevant criteria. Permits issued under the Directive are valid until March 4, 2023, and holders are not eligible to switch to any other category of work or residence permits within Sweden.
