EU Council adopts law for the gradual implementation of the Entry/Exit System

On 18 July 2025, the European Council adopted an EU law enabling the gradual implementation of the Entry/Exit System (EES) over a six-month period. The EES is due to progressively start in October 2025. The EU will confirm the exact start date several months prior to its launch. The European Council and the European Parliament previously reached a provisional agreement allowing EU Member States to gradually introduce the EES. The EES aims to enhance border management and improve the efficiency of controls at the EU’s external borders. The previously announced features and conditions for the phased deployment of the EES remain unchanged.
