Uganda Revenue Authority updates registration details for all registered taxpayers

  • On 21 May 2026, the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) issued a public notice requiring all registered taxpayers to update their registration details on the URA web portal by replacing the Tax Identification Number (TIN) with the National Identification Number (NIN) for individuals or the Business Registration Number (BRN) for non-individuals.
  • All registered taxpayers must update key registration details, including NIN or BRN, active contact information, physical address and nature of business, and will be prompted to do so upon logging into their TIN accounts before proceeding with any transactions.
  • The requirement applies immediately, with taxpayers needing to complete updates before accessing the portal for activities such as filing returns, generating payment slips or processing refunds, electronic invoicing, customs declarations and tax-clearance applications.
  • Businesses should review and update their registration information to prevent disruptions to tax compliance processes, ensure continued access to the URA portal and align internal records with the revised identification requirements.

Executive summary

The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) issued a Public Notice on 21 May 2026 directing all registered taxpayers to update their registration details on the URA web portal. This update is necessary due to the 2025 Amendment of section 4 of the Tax Procedures Code Act, Cap 343, which requires the Tax Identification Number (TIN) to be replaced with the National Identification Number (NIN) for individuals or the Business Registration Number (BRN) for non-individuals, in addition to a TIN issued by a foreign tax authority with which Uganda has a tax treaty or agreement for the exchange of information.

Every registered taxpayer must update:

  • NIN (for individuals) or BRN (for non-individuals)
  • Active or current telephone number(s)
  • Physical address
  • Nature of business
  • Other prescribed registration particulars

The system will prompt taxpayers whose registration details are not up-to-date to update their information upon logging into their TIN account before proceeding with any transaction in the URA web portal. This affects every digital tax interaction, including filing returns, generating payment registration slips, processing refunds, Electronic Fiscal Receipting and Invoicing Solution (EFRIS) invoicing, customs declarations and tax-clearance certificate applications.
