India amends regulations relating to foreign nationals’ registration with the Foreigners Regional Registration Officer

On 1 June 2026, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) amended regulations under the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, tightening the framework for registration with the Foreigners Regional Registration Officer (FRRO). The changes require foreign nationals intending to stay beyond 180 days to complete registration before reaching this threshold and clarify that any permission to remain beyond the permitted stay will be granted only in exceptional circumstances.
