In a Notice of Action issued 15 July 2026, the United States Trade Representative (USTR) announced that it will impose a 25% additional duty on certain products from Brazil, while exempting others. The duty’s imposition follows the USTR’s investigation under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, as amended, into Brazil’s acts, policies and practices involving digital trade and electronic payment services, unfair and preferential tariffs, anti-corruption enforcement, intellectual property protection, ethanol market access and illegal deforestation. Based on the investigation, the USTR determined that Brazil’s acts, policies, and practices are unreasonable or discriminatory and burden or restrict US commerce.
- Canada extends steel tariff measures for an additional year
Canada’s Minister of Finance and National Revenue announced that Canada is extending for an additional year its tariff rate quota (TRQ) for steel, which applies to imports from non-Canada-US-Mexico-Agreement partners. Canada is also extending tariff relief for eligible steel and aluminum products from the United States, and for eligible steel products subject to derivative tariffs. TRQs continue to be based on 20% of 2024 volumes for partners without a free trade agreement (FTA) with Canada and 75% for partners with an FTA in force with Canada. A 50% surtax continues to apply to imports exceeding quota limits. The US and Mexico remain exempt from TRQs.
- Canada Border Services Agency updates priorities list for trade compliance verification
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) released the July 2026 update of its priorities list for trade compliance verification, emphasizing continued efforts to ensure proper compliance with Canadian trade laws. The updated priorities include imports of supply-managed goods, compliance with goods-and-services tax obligations, free-trade-agreement-origin verifications, energy commodities and surtax compliance under various surtax orders for certain goods. The CBSA continues to focus on tariff classification, valuation and origin as key areas of compliance verification.
